INTRODUCTION: Ditboekje is eenoverzicht van hetwerkdatkunstenaarKoen Van Mechelenrealiseerde in hetZiekenhuisOost-Limburg, op de dienst van fertiliteitsspecialist Prof. Ombelet. Dit project bestaatuitzevenwerken; zevencentauren die geborenwerdenuit de mengeling van kunst, wetenschap en filosofie. Waarbij, zoals Nietzsche hetstelde, hetdriftmatigdierlijke (Dionysische) en hetredelijkmenselijke (Apollinische) met elkaar tot eentwee-eenheid - tot een‘derdecultuur’ - zijnvergroeid.
In 2000 sloegenBelgischkunstenaarKoenVanmechelen en vruchtbaarheidsspecialistWillemOmbeletsloegenzevenjarengeledenvoorheteersteenbrugtussen de ‘tweemoeilijkoverbrugbareculturen’, zoals de Britseauteur Charles Percy Snow kunst en wetenschapbestempelde. WillemOmbeletvroeg de kunstenaarom de wetenschappers op zijngerenommeerdefertiliteitscongres‘Andrology in the 90’s’tetrakteren op eenportiekunst. Voorheteerstbracht de kunstenaar ‘The Walking Egg’, eeninstallatie die later zouuitgroeien tot hetsymbool van hunsamenwerking. Hetglazenei op kippenpootjes, aanvankelijkeenaandenkenvoor de congresgangers, bleek de vonkvoorkunstenaar en wetenschapper. Heteigingerspoedig met hen vandoor en kenteenvoorlopighoogtepunt in de uitbouw van eenuniek experiment in hetZiekenhuisOost-Limburg, dat de naam ‘Born’ kreeg.
